Clarifying the Instructional Flow - Phase 3

 

Each unit Focus Question and Deep Reading Cycle now have their own unique Overview pages. 

The Overview page for unit Focus Questions includes these sections:

  • Discussion Scaffolds: Includes framing statements and discussion questions for teachers to use when introducing the Focus Question to their class.
  • Writing Questions: Indicates how many written responses remain to be graded by the teacher or completed by the students. Teachers can also access Grading from this section.
Focus Question Overview

The Overview page for Deep Reading Cycles includes these sections: 

  • Power Sentence: Displays the Power Sentence, an informationally dense and significant sentence from the passage. Teachers facilitate the Power Sentence Lesson to deconstruct the Power Sentence prior to their students reading the passage independently.
  • Discussion Questions: Displays passage-specific questions that teachers can use to help their class synthesize the information in the passage and connect the passage to the Focus Question.
  • Class Progress: Indicates which students have completed the passage and which students have additional work to complete.
  • Writing Questions: Indicates how many written responses remain to be graded by the teacher or completed by the students. Teachers can also access Grading from this section.
  • Scores: Includes current class average and individual student scores for the passage.

1. Focus Question

  • Introduce and discuss the unit Focus Question and video. 

2. Deep Reading Cycle

  • Teach the Power Sentence Lesson. 
  • Students read the passage independently (with digital scaffolds).
  • Review student work and discuss the passage.

3. Synthesis Project 

  • Students discuss the Focus Question and unit passages.
  • Students complete the Synthesis Project, a collaborative group project that communicates the group’s shared response to the Focus Question.

 

Updated Class Progress Indicator 

The Unit Overview class progress indicator now uses an improved design. Class Progress indicates which students have completed the passage and which students have additional work to complete. Clicking on the new indicator opens a modal listing student names and their progress status.
